Revelation 17: The Woman on the Beast

The woman in this vision sits on a scarlet beast, dressed in purple and gold, holding a cup full of abominations (17:3-4) — and the arrangement looks stable, even glamorous, right up until the chapter reveals it was never going to hold. The beast she’s riding will eventually turn on her. Her comfort is temporary and her transport is hostile.

A name that admits what it is
“MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF THE PROSTITUTES AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.” — Revelation 17:5
Most figures in Revelation get named eventually by an angel’s explanation. This one wears her own name on her forehead — the chapter doesn’t need to expose her, because she’s already labeled.
Kings who agree for one hour
The ten horns are kings who “have one mind, and they give their power and authority to the beast” (17:13) — a temporary, unanimous alliance, granted power for a single hour. Nothing about this coalition is built to last; its whole nature is borrowed time.
The turn
The same kings and beast who elevated her are the ones who “will hate the prostitute, and will make her desolate… and will burn her utterly with fire” (17:16). What she rode in on becomes what consumes her — an arrangement of convenience that always had an expiration date built in.
