John 21: Breakfast on the Beach, and Three Questions for Peter

Peter goes back to fishing — a strange move after everything that’s happened, but a believable one. Grief and uncertainty send people back to what they know how to do with their hands. He fishes all night and catches nothing, until a stranger on the shore tells them where to cast and the net comes up bursting (21:6). John recognizes him first — “It is the Lord!” — and Peter, characteristically, jumps in the water rather than wait for the boat.

Charcoal fire, again
Jesus has breakfast waiting over a charcoal fire (21:9) — the same detail John used to set the scene of Peter’s three denials by another charcoal fire (18:18). The echo isn’t accidental. This meal is set up to undo what that courtyard did.
Three questions
Three times Jesus asks Peter some version of “Do you love me?” — matching, round for round, Peter’s three denials. By the third round Peter is grieved, but he answers the same way each time: “Lord, you know everything. You know that I have affection for you” (21:17). Jesus doesn’t demand penance. He gives Peter a job: “Feed my sheep.”
More than can be written
The Gospel closes with a line that gestures past its own pages: “there are also many other things which Jesus did, which if they would all be written… I suppose that even the world itself wouldn’t have room for the books” (21:25). A deliberately overflowing ending for a story that isn’t really over.
