Colossians 2: Full Already

Paul warns the Colossians about being robbed — not of money, but of standing, through philosophy, empty deceit, and human tradition (2:8). Someone, it seems, was telling this church that Christ was necessary but not sufficient, that real depth required something added on top.

The theft he’s guarding against

Whatever exactly was being taught at Colossae — some mix of philosophy, angel worship, and regulations about food and festivals (2:16-18) — the shape of the error is familiar: Christ plus something else. Paul’s whole response is that the “plus” isn’t just unnecessary, it’s a step backward.

Full already

“For in him all the fullness of the Deity dwells bodily, and in him you are made full.” — Colossians 2:9-10

The word “full” is doing real work here. Against a teaching that offered spiritual completion through extra steps, Paul says completion already happened, in Christ, and can’t be topped up.

Shadows and the substance that casts them

Verses 16-17 relegate food laws, festivals, and Sabbaths to the category of “a shadow of the things to come,” adding pointedly: “the body is Christ’s.” A shadow isn’t fake — it’s just not the thing itself, and mistaking one for the other means grasping at silhouettes.
