2 Corinthians 13: Examine Yourselves

This is a third visit Paul is announcing, and he’s tired of being tested. “This is the third time I am coming to you. At the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established” (13:1) — he’s quoting the Law on evidence, warning that this time he won’t go easy on unrepentant conduct. The whole letter has moved through comfort, appeal, and defense; it ends in something closer to an ultimatum, delivered without losing its warmth.

Turning the exam around

“Test your own selves, whether you are in the faith. Test your own selves. Or don’t you know as to your own selves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you are disqualified.” — 2 Corinthians 13:5

The Corinthians had spent the letter testing Paul — his credentials, his presence, his authority. Here he flips the exam back onto them. It’s a sharp move: stop auditing the messenger and audit yourselves. The question isn’t whether Paul passes their standard; it’s whether Christ is actually present in their own lives.

Strength through weakness, one more time

Paul repeats the letter’s central paradox on his way out the door: “we are weak in him, but we will live with him through the power of God toward you” (13:4). The whole letter has argued that weakness is not disqualifying — here it becomes the final word on his own authority.

A blessing that outlasted the fight

The letter’s last verse has traveled far beyond its original quarrel: “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all” (13:14). Whatever the Corinthians’ failures, the letter ends not in judgment but in benediction.

  2. Paul’s authority rests on weakness rather than despite it. Where do you resist that logic in your own leadership or work?
  3. How does a Trinitarian blessing land differently at the end of a letter this contentious?
