1 John: Written So You Would Know

1 John does something no other New Testament letter does: it skips the introduction entirely. No author named, no recipients addressed, no greeting — it simply opens, “That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes,” echoing the Gospel of John’s opening line, except this time the emphasis lands on hands and eyes and ears, not just belief. Whoever is writing wants you to know this is testimony, not theory.

Written to a wounded church
Somewhere behind this letter is a split. Some people who were part of this community left it, and John treats their departure as evidence rather than tragedy alone: “they didn’t belong to us” (2:19). What follows reads like a pastor giving the people who stayed a way to steady themselves against others who claimed superior insight while denying that Jesus had truly come as flesh and blood, and living however they liked.
Three tests, repeated
Rather than argue in a straight line, John circles the same territory three times: do you do what’s right (a moral test), do you love other believers concretely (a relational test), and do you believe Jesus Christ came in the flesh (a doctrinal test)? Each pass adds intensity, but the tests don’t change, because for John these three were never separable.
“He who doesn’t love doesn’t know God, for God is love.” — 1 John 4:8
Confidence as the goal
Nearly every loop ends the same way — so that you may know. Assurance isn’t a side benefit of the letter; it’s the entire point.
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins.” — 1 John 1:9
