Revelation 5: A Lion Announced, a Lamb Revealed

· #revelation #revelation

✝ Passage: Revelation 5

John weeps, loudly enough that it’s worth recording, because no one anywhere is found worthy to open the sealed scroll — until an elder tells him to stop, because “the Lion of the tribe of Judah” has triumphed and can open it. John turns to look at the Lion. What he actually sees is a Lamb, and not a healthy one: standing, as though it had been slain. The whole chapter’s theology sits inside that swap.

Power announced, sacrifice revealed

Every conquering image the culture would expect — Lion, Root of David, the one who has triumphed — gets fulfilled by a slaughtered Lamb standing on its feet. Victory and slaughter turn out to be the same event, seen from two angles.

“I saw a Lamb standing, as though it had been slain.” — Revelation 5:6

A new song for a new reason

The worship that follows isn’t generic. It gives a specific reason for the Lamb’s worthiness — not just power, but a purchase.

“You are worthy… for you were killed, and bought people for God with your blood, out of every tribe, language, people, and nation.” — Revelation 5:9

Questions for study

  1. Why does John weep before the Lamb appears, and what does that reveal about how high the stakes felt to him?
  2. What does it change to realize the “Lion” John is told about and the “Lamb” he actually sees are the same figure?
  3. The elders’ song ties worthiness to a specific act — being killed to purchase people. Why might that matter more than raw power?
