Revelation 21: A New Heaven, a New Earth, No More Tears

Before the tears, before the death, before the mourning and crying and pain, the very first thing this chapter says is gone is the sea (21:1). It’s a strange detail to lead with — not evil, not suffering, just an enormous body of water — until you remember how much of Revelation’s chaos came up out of the sea: the beast, the storms, the isolation. The new creation starts by removing the source of a very specific kind of dread.

The wiping, not just the ending

“He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; neither will there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain, any more. The first things have passed away.” — Revelation 21:4

Notice the verb: not simply “there will be no tears” but “he will wipe away every tear” — an action performed on a person, not a fact stated about the future.

Measured to be livable

The city is measured precisely — twelve thousand stadia each direction, a wall a hundred forty-four cubits (21:16-17) — numbers that feel almost bureaucratic next to jasper walls and pearl gates. The new Jerusalem isn’t left as pure symbol; it’s given dimensions, as if it needs to be a place you could actually live, not just admire.

No temple, because no distance

There’s no temple in this city, “for the Lord God, the Almighty, and the Lamb, are its temple” (21:22). The building that used to mark the gap between God and people is gone because the gap itself is gone.

2. What’s the difference between tears simply ending and God actively wiping them away?
