Matthew 24: Not One Stone Left on Another

The disciples point out the temple’s buildings — by every account one of the ancient world’s great structures — and Jesus doesn’t share the admiration: “Most certainly I tell you, there will not be left here one stone on another, that will not be thrown down” (24:2). It’s a jarring answer to a compliment, and it sets the tone for the whole discourse: don’t get too attached to what looks permanent.

Wars, rumors, and a warning about being fooled
Asked privately when this will happen, Jesus spends more time on how not to be deceived than on a timeline. Wars, famines, earthquakes — “the beginning of birth pains” (24:8), not the end itself. False messiahs and false prophets will produce “great signs and wonders” convincing enough to fool almost anyone (24:24). The dominant instruction isn’t calculation; it’s discernment.
The day nobody gets to know
For all the specific-sounding signs, Jesus is blunt about the actual timing: “But no one knows of that day and hour, not even the angels of heaven, but my Father only” (24:36). He compares it to the days of Noah — ordinary life, eating and marrying, right up until the flood came and “took them all away” (24:38-39). The point isn’t fear of the unknown date; it’s readiness that doesn’t depend on knowing it.
Two servants, two ways of waiting
The chapter closes comparing a servant who stays faithful in his master’s absence to one who decides the master is “delaying” and starts abusing his position (24:45-51). The difference between them isn’t information about the timeline — it’s what they do with the not-knowing.
