Mark 10: Children, Camels, and a Blind Man Who Won't Be Quiet

The disciples try to keep children away from Jesus, evidently assuming he has more important things to do, and his reaction is stronger than the moment seems to call for: “moved with indignation” (10:14), a phrase Mark doesn’t use lightly. Whatever the kingdom of God is, Jesus insists children aren’t a distraction from it — they’re somehow its native citizens.

A ruler who has everything and asks anyway
That scene is followed by a man who has clearly done well — kept the commandments since his youth, and Mark says Jesus “looking at him, loved him” (10:21) — yet he walks away sad, because the one thing asked of him is the one thing he can’t give up. The camel-through-a-needle line (10:25) isn’t exaggeration for effect; it’s Jesus refusing to soften a genuinely hard math for a genuinely wealthy man.
Not to be served, but to serve
James and John ask for the best seats in the coming kingdom, and Jesus answers by inverting the whole ambition:
“For the Son of Man also came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” — Mark 10:45
A blind man who won’t be shushed
The chapter ends with Bartimaeus, shouting for mercy while the crowd tells him to be quiet — and shouting louder. When Jesus asks what he wants, the answer is direct: “that I may see” (10:51). He gets it, and immediately follows Jesus “in the way” (10:52) — by this point in Mark, a loaded phrase. The way leads to Jerusalem, and the cross.
