Luke 3: The Voice in the Wilderness Names Names

Luke opens this chapter like a court record: the fifteenth year of Tiberius, Pontius Pilate governing Judea, Herod tetrarch of Galilee, Annas and Caiaphas as high priests. No other Gospel bothers pinning John the Baptist to this much civic detail. It matters — Luke keeps insisting that the gospel happened inside real politics, to real people, not in some timeless myth-space.

What then must we do?

John’s preaching is fierce — “brood of vipers,” an ax already at the root of the trees — but when the crowd asks what repentance actually looks like, his answers are almost dull. Share a coat. Don’t overcharge. Don’t extort with threats. Repentance here isn’t an emotional state; it’s a change in how you handle your money and your power over other people.

A voice, then a dove, then a name

John insists someone greater is coming who will baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire. When Jesus is baptized, the sky opens, the Spirit descends “in a bodily form, as a dove,” and a voice names him Son. The scene answers John’s preaching directly — this is the one whose sandals John isn’t worthy to untie.

A genealogy that reaches past Abraham

Luke’s genealogy, unlike Matthew’s, runs backward all the way to “Adam, the son of God.” Matthew is arguing Jesus is Israel’s king; Luke is arguing something wider — that this birth concerns the whole human family, not one nation’s line.
