Luke 17: Ten Healed, One Comes Back

✝ Passage: Luke 17
Ten men with leprosy call out from the required distance, and Jesus tells them to go show themselves to the priests — the healing happens somewhere on the road, mid-obedience, before they’ve arrived anywhere. Nine keep walking toward the errand they were told to run. One, a Samaritan, turns back before finishing it, falls at Jesus’s feet, and says thank you.

Where are the other nine?
Jesus’s question isn’t rhetorical scolding so much as plain observation: the math doesn’t require nine ungrateful men to be villains, just distracted ones, moving on to the next thing life required of them. The one who comes back is also the one least likely to have been expected to.
A kingdom already among you
Asked when the kingdom of God will come, Jesus says it won’t arrive with visible signs to point at — the Kingdom of God is within you, already present in ways that scanning the horizon will miss.
Faith the size of a seed
When the disciples ask for more faith, Jesus answers with a mustard seed’s worth being enough to uproot a tree — not more faith, but faith of any real size at all, put to actual use.

- Why might nine of the ten never turn back, even though none of them did anything wrong by continuing on?
- What does it say that the one who returns is a Samaritan, an outsider even among outsiders?
