John 8: A Trap, a Light, and "Before Abraham Was, I Am"

The scribes and Pharisees don’t actually care about the woman caught in adultery, they care about trapping Jesus between the law of Moses and Roman law, which reserved capital punishment for itself. Jesus doesn’t answer immediately. He bends down and writes on the ground, making everyone wait, then answers with a single condition that ends the standoff without breaking either law.

A trap that traps the trappers
Nobody can meet the standard Jesus sets, so nobody throws a stone.
“He who is without sin among you, let him throw the first stone at her.” — John 8:7
Free, but from what
The chapter moves into a long dispute about freedom and slavery to sin, with Jesus claiming that truth itself, not just information but himself as “the truth,” is what actually frees people, regardless of their ancestry or religious pedigree.
Older than Abraham
The argument escalates until Jesus says something that isn’t ambiguous at all. His opponents pick up stones immediately.
“Most certainly, I tell you, before Abraham came into existence, I AM.” — John 8:58
That phrase echoes the divine name from Exodus, and everyone in the room seems to hear it that way.
