John 14: The Way, and a House with Many Rooms

Jesus has just told his disciples he’s leaving and one of them will betray him — not exactly a calming send-off. Chapter 14 opens with him addressing the panic directly: “Don’t let your heart be troubled. Believe in God. Believe also in me” (14:1). He answers dread with an address, not an argument: his Father’s house has room enough, and he’s going to prepare a place.

The way, not just a map
Thomas asks the practical question the others were probably thinking — they don’t even know where he’s going, so how can they know the way? Jesus doesn’t hand him directions. He hands him an identity:
“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me.” — John 14:6
The way isn’t a set of instructions to follow after he’s gone; the way is a person to stay attached to.
Show us the Father
Philip’s request — show us the Father, and that will be enough — gets a gently exasperated reply: “he who has seen me has seen the Father” (14:9). After this long together, Philip still wants a vision beyond the one standing in front of him.
A different kind of peace
The chapter ends with a promise built to survive Jesus’ absence: “Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives” (14:27). Whatever peace the world sells depends on circumstances holding steady. This one is handed over before the circumstances get worse.

- What does it mean, practically, that Jesus is “the way” rather than merely a teacher of the way?
- Philip wanted proof beyond what he’d already seen. Where do you do the same?
- How is the peace of 14:27 different from the mere absence of trouble?
- Jesus promises the Counselor will come (14:16-17, 26). What does he say the Spirit’s job will be?
