Ephesians 5: Walking as Children of Light

The chapter opens with one of the boldest commands in the letter: imitate God. Not admire from a distance, not merely obey — imitate, the way a child picks up a parent’s mannerisms without being told to (5:1).

Children of light
“You were once darkness, but are now light in the Lord.” — Ephesians 5:8
Not “you were in darkness” — you were darkness, and now you are light. Identity changed here, not just conduct, and the behavior Paul asks for in verses 3-14 follows from that change rather than earning it.
Love that empties itself
“Walk in love, even as Christ also loved you, and gave himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God.” — Ephesians 5:2
That pattern — love that gives rather than takes — becomes the template a few verses later for marriage, a relationship Paul frames first as mutual submission (5:21) before he gets specific about husbands and wives. Whatever else the household instructions of 5:22-33 are doing, they’re doing it under a heading of self-giving love, not authority for its own sake.
An old line, reused
Paul quotes Genesis — the two becoming one flesh — and then says plainly he’s really talking about Christ and the church (5:31-32). Marriage, in this chapter, is less the subject than the illustration.
