Acts 10: Before Anyone Says Amen

Watch the timing in this chapter, not just the content. Peter is still mid-sermon — “while Peter was still speaking these words” (10:44) — when the Holy Spirit falls on Cornelius’s entire household. No altar call, no baptism yet, no formal response required. Grace arrives before the process that was supposed to deliver it is even finished, and everyone in the room has to catch up to what God already did.

Two visions, one hinge
The chapter pairs a devout Roman soldier’s angelic visit with Peter’s rooftop trance of a sheet full of animals he’s forbidden to eat. Neither vision makes full sense alone; together they mean one thing. When the voice says “What God has cleansed, you must not call unclean” (10:15), it isn’t really about food. Peter figures that out only once Cornelius’s men are standing at the gate.
No favorites
Peter’s opening line in Cornelius’s house states the theology plainly, ahead of any argument: “Truly I perceive that God doesn’t show favoritism; but in every nation he who fears him and works righteousness is acceptable to him” (10:34-35). It’s less a new doctrine than Peter finally admitting what the Old Testament had said all along.
Water, after the fact
By the time Peter asks “can anyone forbid these people from being baptized with water?” (10:47), the question is almost rhetorical. The Spirit had already answered it.
