2 Corinthians 6: A Resume Written in Hardship

If you asked most people to prove they were qualified for their job, they would list achievements. Paul lists afflictions. “In much endurance, in afflictions, in hardships, in distresses, in beatings, in imprisonments, in riots, in labors, in watchings, in fastings” (6:4-5) — nine or ten items deep, and he’s not finished. This is his letter of recommendation, and it reads like a casualty report.

Credentials nobody wants
The logic is deliberately upside down. Paul is answering critics in Corinth who judged ministers by polish and rhetorical flourish. He answers with scars. Verse 10 crystallizes the paradox: “as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things.” None of that is spin. It is the actual shape of a life spent absorbing cost for someone else’s benefit.
Open wide
Verses 11-13 shift tone entirely — Paul stops defending and starts pleading. “Our mouth is open to you… you are not restricted by us, but you are restricted by your own affections.” He wants reconciliation, not vindication, and says so plainly: open your hearts wide.
Don’t yoke what doesn’t match
“Don’t be unequally yoked with unbelievers, for what fellowship have righteousness and iniquity?” — 2 Corinthians 6:14
A yoke binds two animals to pull one direction at one pace. Paul’s warning isn’t isolationism; it’s a farming image about mismatched partnership — the kind that strains both parties and plows a crooked row. “Come out from among them, and be separate” (6:17) closes the chapter with a call to a distinct, undivided loyalty.
